Biogeography:
Peanuts are native to South America and probably originated in the
foothills of the Andes mountains. Theywere
domesticated from the wild species Arachis monticola in the Peruvian
coastal desert around 4,000years ago. Today,
the greatest diversity of wild varieties of Arachis is found in the
Guaraní region ofParaguay and eastern and
central Bolivia.Peanuts were introduced into
Africa by 16th century Portuguese explorers and later made their way to
theUnited States with the slave trade. Today,
peanuts are grown in more than 80 countries, including India,China, the United States, Brazil and countries of western and
southern Africa. In Australia, peanuts are
grown principally in southern Queensland and on the Atherton tablelands
west of Cairns.
Botanical features:
Peanuts are annual herbaceous legumes that may be prostrate or erect,
with the erect varieties reaching
about 60 cm in height. They have well developed tap roots with numerous
lateral roots. The leaf consists
of four oval leaflets attached to a midrib by a short stalk that allows
them to move. At night and on hot
sunny days, the leaflets close in an upright position. In normal
weather, they lie flat.
Yellow flowers form on the lower portion of the plant about six to seven
weeks
after planting. After self-pollination, the flower petals fall off and
the fertilised
ovary begins to swell, forming a structure called a peg. The peg grows
down into
the soil and the peg tip continues to enlarge, eventually forming a
peanut pod
below the soil surface. Each peg produces from one to four pods, and a
single
plant may yield 40 or more. There are generally two kernals per pod;
however,
some varieties can have three or more kernals per pod.
Peanut plants can tolerate a wide range of soil pH (5.5-7.0), but
dislike
waterlogging and prefer well-drained soils. Depending on the variety,
they
need between three and six months of warm, frost-free weather to mature.
General:
Three varieties of peanuts are grown commercially in Australia. ‘Spanish
red’ and ‘runner’ peanuts both
have small round kernals (seeds) and are used mainly in confectionary.
Virginia peanuts generally have two
elongated kernels per pod. They can be roasted in the shell or used in
the snack food market.
